‘Get into your canoe and leave the hustle and bustle behind’. The canoe route from Hattem to Heerde takes you through one of the most beautiful and peaceful areas of the Northeast Veluwe. Here, nature, silence, and space come together in a relaxed trip on the water.
Start at Ijsseldelta Marina Hattem. From here, follow the Apeldoorn Canal, which slowly leads you into the green landscape, through the Hoenwaard nature reserve and past the Wiessenbergse Kolk. An area where waterfowl such as grebes, godwits, and lapwings can be found. As you paddle along, city sounds will fade and make way for birdsong. Straight banks give way to winding waterways, bordered by reed beds, meadows, and old trees. With a bit of luck, you may spot a heron, coot, or even a kingfisher or beaver along the way.
The Route
The route is part of the Northeast Veluwe Canoe Route and follows the Apeldoorn Canal and a network of quiet waterways near Wapenveld and Veessen. The distance to the Bonenbergersluis near Heerde is approximately 12 kilometers one way, excluding canoe portages. Along the route, there are several jetty locations and parking spots where you can moor for a break or a picnic.
The trip is suitable for both novice and experienced canoeists. The water is calm, the route is easy to navigate, and the scenery is varied.
