Trade and memories: The unique experience of the Hattem flea market
“It is the nicest and coziest flea market in the ´North Veluwe´”, Herman Koopman immediately kicks off enthusiastically about the event that will take place again on Saturday 23 August in the city centre of Hattem. The flea market has been held for some 35 years now and attracts more than 30,000 visitors annually.
For Herman and a number of other volunteers on behalf of Visit Hattem, 2025 will be the second edition they will be organising themselves. “We wanted to go back to the old concept of the past.” The cheerful Koopman explains that in the past, the people of Hattem would clear out their attics at the end of the summer holidays and try to sell their leftover ‘junk’. “ Later on the flea market became a lot more commercial and commercial parties started to get involved.”
With 300 stalls, the flea market can easily be called gigantic and the number of traders from outside Hattem has also been reduced compared to the past. “We really want to focus more on private persons offering their stuff. This also adds more charm to the whole of a pleasant and intimate flea market.”
It also is an excellent opportunity to benefit from the Hattem shopkeepers, who are throwing around special offers on this day. “It is wonderful to see how the local businesses respond to this event”, says Koopman.
Because this is what makes this flea market so special according to Herman. “It is really supported by the whole of Hattem, making our Hanseatic city a calling card for the region on this day. That is why we started using the name ‘Hanzerommelmarkt’. From the private individuals with their tidy attics and associations earning some extra money, to the former ´Hattemers´ who reminisce in their old hometown. It completes the picture and you really feel this when you walk through Hattem on this day.”
Koopman wants to urge visitors to park their cars in the designated areas to avoid a fine. “It is best to choose the special ‘event parking lot’, indicated when entering Hattem. People who want a acquire a place to sell their things at the Hanseatic flea market have to register before July 1.
